Jeremy James Wallace, an Ontario native, purportedly walked into a Macomb County pawn shop on Sept. 6 and asked an employee to see multiple firearms, according to a report.
He asked the worker to see a Sig Sauer P322 handgun before inquiring about a second.
When the worker went to retrieve the latter, Wallace fled the shop with the Sig Sauer and two magazines, which were reportedly unloaded when he stole them.
Authorities pursued Wallace into a wooded area and found him with the Sig Sauer, and one of the magazines was loaded, the report noted.
Wallace was taken into custody and confessed to police that he had used a wetsuit, flotation devices, and swimming fins to swim across the St. Clair River and illegally enter the United States with the intention of stealing a firearm, according to an affidavit.
He also was equipped with ammo, a hammer, and a crossbow pistol, the court filing read.
After he stole a weapon, he was going to swim back to Canada, Wallace said.
He wanted to steal a weapon because he had had his gun taken from him in Canada, according to Wallace.
Authorities seized the stolen items and the ammunition Wallace had on him, and he was charged with improper entry by an alien, possession of a stolen firearm, and alien in possession of a firearm and ammunition, according to the report.
